Romantic weekends start with San Diego backroads

A romantic drive in the country has near the top of couples’ romantic-activity list since horse-and-buggy days.

For a day trip or staycation, there isn’t anyplace better than San Diego for that romantic getaway. Here are some suggestions.

  • Rancho Santa Fe: One of the wealthiest areas in the world, it has a quaint town center, fancy and casual funky restaurants, antique shops and the historic Inn at Rancho Santa Fe. It’s my “Roads of the Ranch” chapter in Joyrides Around San Diego.
  • Old Highway 101: Romantic beaches, nice restaurants on the beach and at Oceanside Harbor, quaint beach towns are along the old highway between Oceanside and Del Mar. It’s “Quintessential California” in Joyrides.
  • The Mountains: From the historic gold-mine town of Julian, to rustic cabins and camping at Mount Laguna, and the alpine forest of Mount Palomar is an alpine forest, there are a variety of options for whatever you like. And by the way, all you women out there driving a Jeep Wrangler or off-road vehicle, your vehicle’s 4×4 equipment needs some exercise. Take the wheel on some of the great trails in our parks. Check out the options in Joyrides.
