I’m due to receive a new 2017 Subaru Forester in a couple of days for a week’s test, so I’m heading out to the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park for a little trail driving.
Yes, I know I just said to stay off the dirt roads for awhile, but the desert gets less rain and the sand dries out faster. The storm is supposed to blow through on Tuesday, so things should be OK by Friday.
My big concern is the condition of the roads and if the Forester can handle it. It’s a capable all-wheel-drive vehicle, but it’s not a rock crawler. I’m sure Subaru would like to get its Forester back in one piece.
I’m considering Old Borrego Valley Road, which is close to Borrego Springs and looks like a nice place for novices to get some dirt on the AWD SUV or 4×4 truck that never gets off a paved road. Here’s a recent video from a guy with an Audi Allroad. It’s the kind of route that lots of us take as a San Diego day trip.
There are two desert drives in Joyrides Around San Diego, both on sandy, public trails: Off the Grid Journey and Beautiful Badlands. Check them out, or wait for the newspaper article that should be running sometime next month.
