Here’s something on my list the next time I visit the Monterey Peninsula, one of my favorite places anywhere: the new Fort Ord National Monument.
It’s been a few years since I’ve been up there, but my story on The Hacienda is one of the most popular on this website. It includes my visit to the historic lodge, plus some drives around the area.
The monument is new, declared by President Obama in 2012.
“The Fort Ord National Monument holds some of the last undeveloped natural wildlands along the Monterey Peninsula,” writes the Bureau of Land Management on its website, “over 35 species of rare plants and animals and miles of world-class recreation trails. The BLM is committed to managing this treasured landscape in a manner that honors the nearly 2 million soldiers who passed through the gates of the former Fort Ord, and those who were here prior to our nation’s soldiers.”
