As summer comes to an end, take the sports car (or even the minivan) out for one last cruise on these great old farm roads that straddle the border of San Diego and Riverside counties. These are the lower peaks of the range that includes 6,100-foot Palomar Mountain. Our drive goes over two passes to the west, Rice Canyon Road and the Pala-Temecula Road, both with rising to well over 1,000 feet.

Our drive for the day back in 2007 was a brand new Mazda Miata with a retractable roof and paddle shifters on the wheel. Loads of fun.
