It’s not exactly Bodie, with its frozen-in-time homes and businesses, but there are very real ghost towns in my neck of the woods, San Diego and Imperial counties.

Awhile back I wrote a column about the lonely drive up Ogilby Road, which runs on the other (east) side of the Algodones Dunes near the Arizona border. Head north to the former settlement of Ogilby, which was once a small mining town and water stop for the Southern Pacific Railroad. There’s a few  building foundations at the town site, plus a primitive cemetery. The cemetery looks like it’s still in use, with grave markers dating to the last few decades.

The ruins of the American Girl Mine are a hike away and a bit north is another ghost town of Tumco. You can use your imagination to create your own creepy factor in honor of Halloween. Enjoy.
