This is a photo from a fantastic 1923 brochure used to sell lots in what today is one of the most exclusive communities in the United States: Rancho Santa Fe.

Part of the San Diego History collection at the UC San Diego library, “Rancho Santa Fe: Yesterday — Today” spins a romantic yarn about a bucolic North American Spanish agricultural community, talking about the “Venturesome spirits of Spain…”

The Ranch is one of my favorite places to drive today, as the “Venturesome spirits of Spain” are still at work in a community of ranches tightly controlled by its residents; something set up in the beginning and discussed in the brochure. A drive through The Ranch is a chapter in my book, Joyrides Around San Diego.

Check out the booklet and you’ll find in your visit nearly a century later that, in fact, the community is pretty special.
