The Automobile Club of Southern California has two great “Mini Maps,” kid-sized and kid-friendly maps that get your kids into the travel mode, even before the car gets loaded up.

With the Route 66 and U.S. National Parks edition, there’s a route map and sites along the way, with factoids and pictures to color. Actually, they’re fun for adults as well, as they point out some of the oddball attractions you’ll see.

I remember the planning for our family trips as much as the trips themselves. I wish I’d had maps like these. The maps are available at your local Auto Club office, free to members and $1.95 for non members.
