One of my favorite slices of history, the Desert View Tower near Jacumba, can be yours for $1.25 million.

I’ve visited there several times over the years and talked with Ben Schultz, who’s owned the tower since around 2000. The tower is located in extreme western Imperial County, just over the line from San Diego County. It has a sweeping view of the desert and of Interstate 8 at Mountain Springs Grade. Today’s freeway drops from the San Diego County community of Jacumba down a few thousand feet to the desert in just a few miles.

The tower is featured in the “Towering Old Highway” chapter of my book, Joyrides Around San Diego, with details from my most recent visit, in 2015, plus directions and a plan for a whole day trip along old U.S. 80. Here’s a story I did way back in 2003 on the tower.

And my Old Highway 80 video gives you a look inside the tower.
