It’s a road few people take, this old, unpaved farming road runs through the west edge of the Cuyamaca peaks, with vistas of what our coastal region looked like before it turned into a big city. And over on Instagram this week, I’m featuring photos of the trip you can take.

One of my favorite drives in Joyrides Around San Diego is the Curves, Dirt and Cuyamaca trip from Descanso north to the south end of the Pine Hills neighborhood of the old gold-rush town of Julian.

Boulder Creek Road is about 18 miles of unpaved, public road that begins just north of Descanso, the small, mountain town off of Interstate 8 east of Alpine. Twist through the town and then head out on the dirt road, which ends at Engineers Road at the Pine Hills fire station. Pack a lunch and picnic on the road, enjoying the views.
