Here’s an out-of-the-way spot for road food… the Pala Store.
I just checked Yelp! and it’s still good. So if you’re headed to Palomar or any of the casinos in the Valley Center area, stop in here. It’s a bit more upscale than it used to be, but the little town of Pala is genuinely unique… a small, Native American town with its original Mission still intact.
The church, which is just across the street from the store, claims it is the only original California Mission still serving its original population. In this case, Pala is an astensia, or annex, originally from the Mission San Luis Rey in Oceanside.
If you’re out driving this weekend, stop in at 3000 Pala Mission Rd, Pala, CA 92059.
